Sediment Bioassay

BMI offers sediment toxicity tests using U.S. EPA recommended organisms, for which BMI maintains in-house cultures. For freshwater tests, the amphipod Hyallela azteca and midge Chironomus tentans are exposed to sediments in an intermittent renewal chamber. Lumbicules variegatus sediment tests are typically utilized to address bioaccumulation. Saltwater sediment tests may incorporate a variety of test organisms, with the amphipods Leptocheirus plumulosus and Ampelisca abdita being the most commonly applied.
